I think that key is “L”. Just press it while a movie is playing and it should turn them off.

Why? Ok, maybe you get the latest updates, but you prevent to alle the people that does not have the Pi connected to be able to use Raspbmc.
Why not distributing a simple working version? (like openelec and all the other OSes available for the Raspi) Is there a reason behind this choice?

They only happen in movies ripped to M4V files. If I rename them as MP4 files they still play, but still show subtitles. This doesn’t happen under media player in windows so I know the subtitles are not ‘burned’ into the video
